What Is a Megaways Slot?
A Megaways slot replaces fixed paylines with a reel that resizes on every spin. On the standard layout each of six reels shows between two and seven symbols, chosen at random, and any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left count as a win. Multiply the six reel heights together and you get the number of ways for that spin: 64 when every reel shows two symbols, 117,649 when every reel shows seven.
The mechanic was created by the Australian studio Big Time Gaming, which licenses it to other studios. Licensees put the word in the title — Gonzo’s Quest Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways — but Big Time Gaming’s own games often go without it. Bonanza, Extra Chilli, White Rabbit and Millionaire are Megaways games, and most Ontario lobbies list them under those plain names, so a search for “Megaways” will not find them.

What usually comes with it
The resizing reel is the only part every Megaways game shares. Most add the same small set of features on top, and the catalogue feed lists them for each game:
- Free-spin rounds are listed on 206 of the 219 titles. In most Megaways games the bonus round is where the larger wins come from.
- Win multipliers are listed on 68, usually growing during the free-spin round.
- Cascading or tumbling reels — winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in — are common on the shelf, though the feed does not tag them consistently.
- Gamble features appear on 17 titles and respins on 15.
None of this changes the return. A feature decides how a game pays — often, rarely, in bursts — while the RTP decides how much it pays back over millions of spins.

Two things stand out. First, the share is almost constant: Megaways are 3.2% to 5.3% of every lobby, so a bigger casino simply has more of them. Stardust Casino and PlayFallsview, both on the Pala platform, give the mechanic the most room of the thirteen, at 5.3% and 5.0% of their shelves.
Second, among the four casinos that publish RTP in the lobby, the averages for the same mechanic differ by 1.33 points: FanDuel at 95.07%, PlayFallsview at 94.72%, the SkillOnNet brands at 94.06% and Stardust at 93.74%. The next section shows where that gap comes from.

Miki gives the mechanic the largest share of any lobby we have counted: 123 Megaways in 1,671 games, 7.4%, ahead of BetUnited at 7.0% and NorthStar Bets at 6.3%, 89 in 1,407. We matched every Megaways title that at least three of the four lobbies publish an RTP for: 119 games. Only 27 carried the same RTP everywhere. On the other 92, FanDuel published the highest figure 52 times and Stardust the lowest 54 times.
How each casino compares, game by game
Set against the SkillOnNet brands, game by game: FanDuel was higher on 45 of 99 shared titles, equal on 41 and lower on 13, an average of +0.94 points; PlayFallsview was higher on 51 of 87, an average of +0.91; and Stardust was mostly equal, higher on 19 and lower on 23 of 114. The two most widely carried Megaways in the province, Gonzo’s Quest Megaways and Piggy Riches Megaways, are in all 13 lobbies and run at about 93.75% at the SkillOnNet brands and FanDuel but 90.71% at PlayFallsview and Stardust.
Big Time Gaming’s own games show the same pattern. FanDuel runs Queen of Riches at 96.90% where the other three publish 94.09%, and Millionaire at 96.30%, level with PlayFallsview, against 94.61% at the SkillOnNet brands and Stardust.
Hockey Power Plays Megaways is the reverse case, and a reminder that no casino is best on every title: 95.73% at the SkillOnNet brands, 90.74% at FanDuel. Not in any way you would notice. In the catalogue we read in full, the 217 Megaways that publish an RTP average 94.06% with a median of 94.48%; the other 5,087 slots average 93.68% with a median of 94.00%. Under half a point on the average is smaller than the gap between two casinos running the same game.

14 titles show a minimum and a maximum RTP rather than a single figure, and the lobby displays the top one. The widest is 5 Lions Megaways from Pragmatic, at 94.50% – 96.50%; Fury of Odin Megaways runs 93.98% – 95.07% and Vikings Unchained Megaways 96.50% – 96.91%. A range usually means the return depends on a choice inside the game, such as a bonus-buy option or a feature bet, so read the help screen before treating the higher figure as yours.

20 studios supply the Megaways in this catalogue. Among those with four or more titles, averages run from 91.57% at Red Tiger to 95.62% at Big Time Gaming. That spread is the real story of the mechanic: the studio sets the price, and Megaways inherits it.

Read the last column against the third. Pragmatic, the largest supplier with 45 titles, publishes its Megaways at 94.48%, the same average as the rest of its slots (94.48%). Red Tiger, with 35, sits at 91.57% — low, but no lower than its other games at 91.44%. Big Time Gaming prices its own invention the same way: 16 Megaways at 95.62% against 95.49% for its other slots, within a fifth of a point.
Others do lift their Megaways by a point or more: Blueprint (94.89% against 93.73%), Light & Wonder (95.48% against 94.40%), iSoftBet (93.56% against 92.51%) and Inspired (95.43% against 94.43%). Volatility does not buy you return: high-volatility Megaways average 93.88%, below the medium-high group at 94.92%. What it changes is the ride. Stakes: Megaways From Five Cents a Spin

A jackpot version is not automatically a worse one. Playtech’s two and Blueprint’s Mighty Griffin and Bison Rising sit above the shelf average; Blueprint’s two Goonies jackpot titles publish 93.00% and 91.50%, and several Red Tiger jackpot titles drop to 90.71% at some casinos. Big Time Gaming’s originals are easy to miss because most lobbies drop the word: Bonanza is in 10 of the 13 lobbies and Extra Chilli in 11, but only BetRivers calls Bonanza “Bonanza Megaways”. Search the lobby for the plain name. FanDuel publishes the highest version of both, 96.11% for Bonanza (level with PlayFallsview) and 96.63% for Extra Chilli.
How to Pick a Megaways Slot in Ontario
- Open the information panel first. The RTP shown there is the version this casino runs. On Megaways the same game can differ by up to five points between Ontario sites.
- Compare the casino, not just the game. If a title you like publishes around 90.7% where you play, check whether another registered casino runs the 93% or 96% version.
